Wu-Tang: An American Saga: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
Wu-Tang: An American Saga

Critics Consensus

While not quite as impressive as its legendary subject matter, An American Saga is a beautifully rendered and raw exploration of the Wu-Tang journey.

Critic Reviews for Wu-Tang: An American Saga Season 1

All Critics (14) | Top Critics (5)

The series undeniably feels most alive when the musical elements are made central... and the coming-of-age crime drama takes a back seat.

It's good and so gritty you'll need to pick the grit from your teeth afterwards.

It's powerful seeing the world Wu-Tang Clan grew out of and how success was their only salvation.

Cliched crime show can't live up to rap group's legacy.

An inspirational success story which fans can see now see play out in Wu-Tang: An American Saga.

This eight part cliche stuffed dramatic telling... is just all over the place.

As its animated artwork at the opening credits would have you assume, Wu-Tang: An American Saga is beautifully shot and edited-but it also feels raw and genuine.

Set against the physical and moral grayscale backdrop of Staten Island, Wu-Tang: An American Saga roars to life.

Sep 5, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

An American Saga successfully paints them as such, reinforcing how impressive of a feat it was for those nine young men to unify and make history.

Solid performances align nicely with a heroic hip-hop origins tale.

Stream it, though it does feel like Wu-Tang: An American Saga will need to quickly define its supporting characters to hold our interest.

Sep 4, 2019 | Full Review…

A dense look at how it all came together, with a strong cast that includes Ashton Sanders ("Moonlight") as Bobby Diggs, a.k.a. RZA. Even so, with that much time to fill, the pacing doesn't exhibit much sense of urgency.

Good show. Although some drama seems to be added the acting is good.

I'm so glad that they decided to do this story as a series instead of just a movie. It really allows the viewer to understand a lot of the subtleties that had a reaching affect on the lives of the characters. A movie wouldn't have done this story justice.

Great show. If you are a Wu fan, you'll love it. Even if your not familiar with Wu, I'd recommend you give it a watch.

If you grew up on Wu Tang this show is a must watch. Only 4 stars because the actor that plays Method Man is a non match...all the others nail it.

This show will capture you. Grab you, bent you. The fact that it can run myself, through those emotions is very impressive to me.

Interesting depiction of the groups history. Old footage of the Clan is screened in front of the remaining group members and their reactions to the footage are a core part of the documentary spliced in between footage with narration of their path to becoming hip hop legends.

It's like watching the same episode every week. 5 weeks in and they barely touch on music. I get that it's a drama about their lives but with enough group members they could have brought you through the journey as the group comes together. They tease you with about 30 seconds of music and then cut back to the same stuff. It feels like they're just leading the season into a finale where everyone eventually says hey we can all do music and it's going to be over before any of it is explored. I hope it's good enough to get a season two because it would be awesome to see the music side of all this. The casting is really good and I mean I'm good with the drama and struggles but it's just endless tease about maybe doing music. Slow death on this one.

Really got me from the get go. Love how the characters come together. You don't need to be from the streets or black to relate to the characters and the story. Just good storytelling and acting.
