Nancy Drew: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
Nancy Drew

Critics Consensus

An appealing aesthetic and promising ensemble can't quite manage to liven up Nancy Drew, an overly broody and unfortunately bland mystery that follows too closely in the footsteps of the shows it aspires to be.

Critic Reviews for Nancy Drew Season 1

All Critics (22) | Top Critics (10)

While this series goes forth as a supernatural thriller approach to the Nancy Drew story, it doesn't go overboard with the supernatural element, realizing that less is more in this type of story.

It's not there yet, it's really struggling, but you sense that it's got the goods somewhere.

So sure, a lot of Nancy Drew is silly and contrived and much too easy. Some of the teased-out plot developments are disappointing... Yet, it's a nice complement to Riverdale and, even with the ghosts, is still more low-key and less ridiculous.

This Nancy Drew feels a breath of fresh air in a TV landscape full of cookie cutter remakes and revivals. It may not be an original concept, but it's certainly an original spin on a franchise we already know and love.

Nancy Drew did an excellent job reeling viewers in, making their spines tingle, and setting up multiple plot lines to be further explored throughout the season.

This Drew is just dull.

Oct 10, 2019 | Full Review…

The dialogue in Nancy Drew is similarly cheesy, and, at times, forced and unnatural for the sake of explaining unnecessarily complicated plot developments.

Oct 9, 2019 | Full Review…

A slow-paced pilot with dialogue that's supposed to elicit a smile but instead falls flat.

Oct 9, 2019 | Full Review…

Ghostly potential as-yet unreached, Nancy Drew is not a better alternative to any of the shows from which it draws inspiration.

Oct 9, 2019 | Full Review…

What makes Nancy Drew's appeal span generations, however, aren't her relationships. It's the mysteries themselves... The first two episodes do not yet prove that this new drama has captured that very crucial aspect of the Nancy Drew legacy quite yet.

Oct 10, 2019 | Full Review…

There are elements... that feel entertaining and nicely updated and the cast is decent, albeit extraordinarily CW-y. But somehow fiction's original teenage girl detective has been brought back to TV in a way that feels primarily derivative.

Oct 9, 2019 | Full Review…

Teasing out the mystery does offer some hope of hooking an audience, but everything else about the series feels stale.

No connection to the source material other than a handful of character names. Absolutely unnecessary; worst Drew yet.

It's trying way too hard to be Veronica Mars and fails at it. While that's the honest case, it's not horrible it's just not great.

The casting is good but we don't need anymore shows with the Riverdale approach. Where it's all about sex and vain cliche characters that are hard to stomach.

Good concept, interesting characters, nice twist on the classic Nancy Drew Mysteries

Pilot episode of the series Nancy Drew gives a good start! Despite the fact that the series has its flaws, and it will clearly leave an ambiguous impression on fans of a book character with a large herd, the series will play a free role in restoring the character's popularity. In addition, the series is inherent in mysticism and mystery that all fans fell in love with from books, films and the first series. The atmosphere of the series as if copied from the comics "Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys: The Big Lie" - gloomy, not childish, and also very modern attractive. The approach to choosing a cast of the creators of the series is ambiguous, but still the actors cope with the task well. In brow, I really like the series!

Pilot has little Nancy Drew feel to it which doesn't bode well for the rest of the series. It tied up threads almost too quickly. A lot of the characters don't feel like the characters they're supposed to be. George and Bess(no longer cousins) may be the biggest offenders next to Carson Drew. It has little to do with the source material besides the small snippets and the actress playing Nancy reenacting a few covers. This could be fine for a season but I can't see it going on longer than that.
