Critic Reviews for Emergence Season 1

All Critics (27) | Top Critics (10)

ABC's Emergence looks like it could be a winning proposition. And even if the suspense and premise begin to sag, there's always Allison Tolman to keep hope alive.

This isn't "Fargo," it's not "Lost," but better than ripping off either of those shows, "Emergence" might just be good.

A shame this wasn't really set on the Island, but the decent "Stranger Things"-loving pilot offers a reasonable approximation.

Tolman finds emotional, subtle beats that lesser actresses would miss.

Supernatural mystery has strong cast, lots of violence.

Oct 7, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Overall, Emergence is a very ABC mystery show. In fact, it is so much on-brand for the network that one wonders how it was ever an NBC consideration in the first place.

'Emergence' is a thrill ride and a supernatural, sci-fi mystery that will keep you guessing.

Oct 5, 2019 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

Though the family drama isn't as compelling as it should be, the show plants enough seeds to make for an interesting premise, and Emergence is worth checking out to see how it all unfolds.

Sep 25, 2019 | Rating: 7/10 | Full Review…

Emergence's pilot is a pleasantly spooky hour, with some not-all-that-faint echoes of Netflix's Stranger Things. It's aided immeasurably by the casting of Tolman.

Sep 25, 2019 | Full Review…

Emergence has some sketchy moments, but Allison Tolman's presence more than makes up for whatever dips there are in the writing.

Sep 25, 2019 | Full Review…

Tolman brings to the role the warmth and shrewdness she did to a similar part in FX's Fargo; it's a pleasure simply to watch her think through the case.

Really could not sympathize or empathize with anything that the writers were trying to do. Initial episode had my interset, but that rapidly fell by the wayside.

Doesn't look like much, but the country setting gives it a unique vibe. However, it doesn't appear to be a lasting series thou

ill be watching this one, really interesting debut

Very "C" level writing. Worth watching if you have nothing else to do. The story is made of a bunch of tropes we have seen time and time again. Mysterious kid shows up at the site of a disaster, has telekinetic powers, and is on the run from some shadowy organization. I think the critics give it positive reviews because the main character is an overweight average looking woman. That's the only unique spin in the entire show.

First network television mystery/drama/ show I've liked in a longggg time.
  • Oct 02, 2019
Loved her in Fargo. This seems familiar to Stranger Things

I'm on the fence after the first episode. I'm curious, but the acting is not really doing a thing for me. I'm all for a strong female lead (the female lead here is a bit weak); however, the scene with the break-in had me rolling my eyes.... really....

Bad script cannot save these actors. No reason to keep going.
