Critic Reviews for David Makes Man Season 1

All Critics (20) | Top Critics (8)

The surrealism of David Makes Man channels McCraney's out-of-body experiences to wrenching, lyrical effect: Even when the show ends, the quiet grace of its protagonist hovers over the viewer.

Right from the start, there's a distinct rhythm that'll hook you; a tonal confidence that's as rhapsodic as it can be calm.

One of the best things about David Makes Man is how it gives us access to the inner thoughts of its characters, often through their daydreams, but also though imaginary figures or even scrawling text on the screen.

Simply wonderful and stirring.

David Makes Man has growing pains. But at its best, it's a beautiful coming-of-age story about a black teenager, the people who want him to live up to all his promise, and a country that doesn't seem to have room for him.

The story of David is pretty complex all by itself; with some of McRaney's artistic flourishes, though, he really brings the viewer into the mind of David, who really wants to break out of his situation but is scared he never will.

They reveal how the journey from childhood to manhood can be both harsh and exhilarating in one of the most original and riveting TV shows this year.

Along with McDowell's disarming vulnerability, these lyrical passages give David specificity and dimension.

McCraney's gift as a storyteller is to get inside the pressures faced by young, specifically young black men and enable the audience to intimately understand why David makes the choices that he does...

McCraney and his collaborators do a superb job of etching in these different communities and the people in them, and of getting us to want to protect David in a way he'd be afraid to ask anyone in his own life to do.

Audience Reviews for David Makes Man: Season 1

"David Makes Man" should be doing a heck of a lot better in the other tv ratings (as of 10/10/2019). It is a spectacular series, and Akili McDowell in the title role has to be seen to be believed. So does Alana Arenas who plays David's mom. The sides I've seen to all the other characters leave me wanting to know more about them. I am fully invested in everyone's story.

Great coming of age story of a boy trying to be successful while living in the Ghetto.

If you liked Moonlight, then you'll love this. If you hate vague and unexplained scenes, this may not be the show for you. The show wants to speak on black masculinity and code-switching but lacks the understanding to deliver on promises.

If you′re interestedanother silly, nonsense, cheap, plagiarizing lgbt brainwashing, Enjoy!

I have watched it every week and DVR it for future reference. It is so necessary to understand the minds of our young black men. The scene where he wants to cry and hug his mother is so authentic. His crush on Tare. The revelation of his biggest anxiety ...the man that murdered Sky was all so well portrayed.

A.Maz.Ing!! Beautiful cinematography and brilliant acting from the young cast. In every episode, Akili McDowell commands the audience to remember his name.

I watch it with my granddaughter and we both love it!

The first season's blurry beginning did not resonate with me. Those dream like sequences and ghost just seemed unnecessary. I was bored by 40 minutes and stopped looking.

One of the best shows I have seen in a long time! McCraney will capture you right off the bat with a personal look into David's inner turmoil and conflicts between his reality and the life he wants for himself, his family, and his community. I am blown away and will definitely keep tuning in. We need more shows like this!!!
